The girls of the Zeta Psi chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Wake Forest raised money for, organized, and presented the first “Queen for a Day” party for the Winston-Salem, North Carolina district this past Thursday, April 6th, 2006.  With the help of Brenner’s Children’s Hospital staff as well as several local beauty pageant queens, the event was an amazing and fun time for about 30-35 beautiful young girls!

We were able to have several activities for the girls to enjoy, beginning with a “manicure station”, which included a variety of colors from which each girl chose one to have painted on her nails and was able to keep for later on as well!  Next, the “makeup station” was the place to go for beauty-pageant-queen glamour: lip-colors, blush, and eye shadows.  The “bead-making table” had colorful, pretty beads for making necklaces and bracelets: there were even glow-in-the-dark letter beads.    At this station also each girl received a “pageant banner” to wear across their chest with their name on it.

Before the girls move onto the “picture station”, they each were given a bright pink boa, a tiara, and a synthetic flower (their choice in color) to wear and keep.  The “picture station” included bright, shimmery, and pageant-esque background cloth and a Princess Rocker donated for the event by Levels for Discovery.  The girls all truly looked like pageant queens with their beautiful smiles.  Some of the girls showed off their modeling skills, such as by draping themselves over the rocker or blowing kisses at the camera.

With their new Polaroid model photos, the girls then taped the pictures into a card and decorated the card to commemorate their being “Queen for a Day”.  At this “card-making station”, there were tons of markers, foam stickers, colorful glitter glue, googly-eyes, Disney and other kinds of stickers, and more.  Some of the girls made several cards for family members as well, demonstrating their artistic and creative talents.

Of course, there were Capri-suns, Disney princess movies (like Aladdin), and goody-bags to enjoy as well!  The goody-bags consisted of several variations of treats; there were bubble-tubes, necklaces, stick-on-earrings, fairy-wands, lip-gloss rings, headbands, pencils, fruit-scented “scratch-n-sniff” nail-filing boards, and much more.  One of the in-patients was unable to come to the place of the party, so some of us went to her room, bringing something from each station so she was able to have her own little party in her room—to the background music of CMT too!  She looked just as stunning as Shania with her tiara and makeup, too.

At one point during the day, I saw one of the girls sitting quietly and staring at the Polaroid picture of herself.  When I came over and asked her what she thought, she just smiled and said, “I look pretty.”  Each girl was able to see just how dazzling they really are this past Thursday.  I hope, and I believe, that it was a truly special and unforgettable day for everyone who came.
