Queen for a Day Philadelphia hosted its annual Holiday Party.  The party was a Queen for a Day and Heroes party.  This was the largest party Queen for a Day Philadelphia has had yet!  There were approximately 20 girls and boys catered to!  The girls had their usual day of pampering (makeovers, manicures, self esteem talks) and the boys were able to play games with Spiderman and Superman!  In addition, the students and parents of Dance! By Debra DiNote in Washington Township, NJ donated an abundance of toys which were given as gifts to all patients.  Girls were crowned Queen for a Day and had their picture taken and boys were real "Heroes" as they took pictures as Spiderman and Superman's sidekicks!  An amazingly blessed time was had by all!!  Volunteers included Stephanie Garland (Philadelphia Director), Megan Daly, Rachel Armstrong, Becky Haan, Gina Walp, Danielle Beato, Ede Jenkins, Jeff Bordi, and Carmen Pizzo (Bethel Christian Center Youth and Young Adult Volunteers)

QFAD Philadelphia hosted a Queen for a Day and Heroes Party in the Seashore House of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  The girls party was complete with manicures, make-overs, crafts, and some self-esteem talks ~ All parts of a true Beauty Experience!  The boys had a great day spending time with Firefighters from the Blackwood Volunteer Fire Company (NJ), playing some great indoor sports games, and making crafts.  We also had a special appearance by Spiderman and Superman (who were very willing to take lots of pictures and play games with all of the patients)!  The day was full of Blessings and Laughter.  Volunteers included Stephanie Garland (Philadelphia Director & MAO Miss All State 2007), Megan Daly, Rachel Armstrong, Jeff Bordi and Carmen Pizzo (Bethel Christian Center Youth Group and Young Adult volunteers) as well as some of the Blackwood Volunteer Fire Company.

December 16, 2006

On Saturday, December 16, 2006 from 1-3pm, Queen for a Day Philadlephia hosted a Queen for a Day and Heroes Party at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  It was held in the 6 east playroom.  Myself (Stephanie Garland, QFAD Philadelphia Director & MAO local title holder Miss All State), Alexis Pelletier (MAO Miss Avalon) Jacqui Conroy, Olivia Devine and Danielle DiNote (three teen volunteers), 5 members of the Blackwood Fire Department and George Clark (Marine/Toys for Tots representative) catered to approximately 20 patients in the playroom.

The girls were treated to makeovers, manicures, hair-dos and were crowned Queen for a Day.  As the girls were pampered by title holders and volunteers, the boys were given their very own fire hats and gift kits put together by the Blackwood fire department and spent the afternoon enjoying games and fun times.  Toys for Tots also donated an abundance of gifts and each child was able to take home 2 toys of their choice.  There was quite an abundance of toys left over after that and the rest were given to children who were too sick to visit the party and then donated to the chapter for future parties.  In addition, the patients created crafts and also decorated their own Christmas cookie with icing and sprinkles.

Towards the end of the afternoon, we had a surprise guest brought by Sarah Cohn (MAO Miss Camden County), Finley, the Mascot for the Camden Riversharks Baseball Team.  Finley took pictures with the patients and also came room to room with me to take pictures with those patients too sick to come to the party.  A fun and blessed time was had by all and I look forward to the January/February Party!

August 25, 2006

On Monday, August 25, 2006 from 3-5:30pm, QFAD Philadlephia hosted a Queen for a Day Party at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  It was held in the 6 west playroom and was a blast!  Myself (Stephanie Garland, QFAD Philadelphia Director & MAO local title holder Miss All State), Jamie Ginn (MAO Miss Delaware) Jacqui Conroy and Danielle DiNote (two teen volunteers), MAO local director Joan Cooper and Child Life Special Kerin Silber catered to approximately 15 patients in the playroom.  The day was full of fun and laughter, 2 things many of the patients had not had in quite a while.  We also traveled to approximately 3 rooms for patients who were too ill to attend the party.   The party went wonderfully and each time I host an event, I am more and more touched by the children and am anxious to continue developing the chapter.

I have also developed a good working relationship with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and in addition to individual Queen for a Day parties, I have also been able to attend special events at the hospital and do individual Queen for a Day makeovers for girls.  Late in the summer, I was able to be a part of a cardiac patient's birthday, which was a princess party.  The young girl was so precious, even though she was very sick and just had a heart transplant, she radiated so beautifully at her party.  I was able to give her a tiara, give her a makeover and do her hair for her party.  I was also able to do the same for 2 other cardiac patients who were very ill.  The chapter's relationship with the hospital is developing nicely and I look forward to my future endeavors with CHOP as well as trying to expand to other facilities.

DATE:            December 3, 2005

LOCATION:  Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

On December 3, 2005, I was able to host my first Queen for a Day party at CHOP.  The party was an all day event spanning from 11-3:30.   The party went very well and I am excited to present all of the details of the day!

Volunteers were very plentiful and included girls from Rowan University’s Tri-Sigma Sorority, Students from Temple University’s AMSA club, Two AMAZING girl scouts (Brielle and Danielle Palambo) and their moms working on their Silver Medals of Achievement, Sarah Cohn (Miss Liberty, local MAO title holder in NJ) Alexis Pelletier (Miss Stars and Stripes, local MAO title holder in NJ) Georgine DiMaria (Miss All-State, local MAO title holder in NJ) and myself Stephanie Garland (QFAD Philadelphia Director and Miss Gloucester County, MAO local title holder in NJ).

The girls were treated to a make-over, manicures, their very own crowning, a small bouquet of silk roses, fun prizes, a QFAD hat which were donated, and crafts such as picture frames to place the picture they were given to remember the day.  My favorite craft was a mirror which the girls decorated the back of and on the side which had the mirror, a laminated paper with quotes which discussed inner beauty was glued on in place of the mirror, so the girls always remember their true beauty and confidence comes from their hearts.

Approximately 15 girls came down to the party area which was the 5-south playroom in CHOP and I (with a volunteer or two or another title holder) went up to about 10 rooms of girls who were too ill to make it down to the party, and I must say I enjoyed that the most.  Even though most of the girls were too sick to move, you could see by the peaceful smile on their faces that they were being so blessed.  Even though a few things needed some smoothing out for the next party, the day went very well and approximately 25 girls were touched.  I look forward to the parties to come I the future in which I can bless many more girls.

DATE:            November 19, 2005

LOCATION:  Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

I am very pleased to report that I had my first Heroes Party at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) on November 19, 2005.  It was wonderful day and I truly believe many children were blessed at the event.

I had a number of volunteers for the party which included Haddonfield Police Officers, Firefighters and Medics from the City of Philadelphia, Adam Bruckner from the Philadelphia Kixx Soccer team, many members of AMSA from Temple University, Alexis Pelletier (Miss Stars and Stripes 2006 local MAO title holder in NJ) and myself Stephanie (Miss Gloucester County 2006 also local MAO title holder in NJ).  The event took place from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and approximately 40 children attended the party.

The Heroes party was available to all children in the hospital.  My goal in establishing this chapter was to bless as many children as possible so I didn’t want to exclude certain illnesses or restrict the party to boys only, since Queen for a Day would be held on a different day.  However many children were available to attend were welcome to attend.  The party was held in the Seashore House of CHOP and housed many children with life-threatening diseases and/or children in need of severe rehabilitation.  By the end of the party, approximately 40-45 children attended.

Children were treated to a pizza party, numerous games with the volunteers, hats which were created that said “I’m a Hero”, free coloring books and crayons provided by the Philadelphia Fire Department and lots of fun and good times.  I am not sure who enjoyed the day more, the children or me.  The children’s faces were beaming with joy and happiness, I was so honored to be able to bless the children at the Heroes party, the smile on their faces made all of the planning and preparation worth while and I cannot wait to bring the party to CHOP again.
