The Miami Chapter of Queen for a Day had our second very special event at Baptist Children’s Hospital on April 28, 2009. Queen for a Day partnered up with Univision’s hit reality competition Nuestra Belleza Latina (NBL) to help give these kids an unforgettable memory. The top 7 finalists were our volunteers, and last year’s winner, Melissa Marty, was also present to take pictures, participate, and sign photos for each queen and hero.
The girls arrived looking radiant and beautiful, they were ready to play with the kids, make them feel like queens and heroes. Today it was all about them! Each girl and boy was given the undivided attention of one of the beautiful contestants. Together they make frames covered in glitter and jewels, sashes, crafts, did their hair and makeup, decorated fire hats and badges. They were walked through each station, and later crowned and given a goodie bag complete with toys, boas, coloring books, and even a CD with recordings from the Nuestra Belleza contestants. They each were able to take their special photo back to their room to hang up as a memory of this special day.
We also had a few room visits. The kids eyes lit up as the girls walked in to spend some time with them. They were enchanted by their beauty and were already asking “when will the princesses be back?” They enjoyed coloring and being crowned in this intimate setting.
My favorite part of the event was seeing the parents watch their kids play, smile, and enjoy themselves. I loved how the children were enchanted by the beauty of the finalists and how it really was a magical experience for them. The kids felt special, famous, and most of they were happy. For that moment in time they weren’t feeling sick or in pain, they were being kids. I also loved watching the parents call their friends and relatives tell them about the fabulous event that was happening at the hospital. They were excited their kids were smiling and enjoying their day.
