August 4th, Queen/Hero for a Day visited the Pediatric
Floor of Beaumont Hospital once again to bring our Royal Tuck-In
Service. Eight volunteers (one from the Detroit Police Department) went
room to room to visit around twenty children ages 6 months to 17. We
treated each queen and hero with a new stuffed animal, and hand-made
blanket and then read them a story which they got to keep. Everyone had
a wonderful time. |
|
On Monday, June 16th, five volunteers from Queen & Hero
for a Day shared time with 25 special boys and girls at Beaumont
Hospital in Royal Oak Michigan. This was the second date of our Royal
Tuck-In Service which has received rave reviews from their Child Life
Specialist. We tucked each child in with a new donated blankie, let
them choose a new stuffed animal and read them a bedtime story which
they got to keep. To keep them brave during the night we put a glow
bracelet on each child. |

Children's Hospital Visit – June 16, 2008
By Nikki Follis-QFAD Children's Hospital of Michigan Coordinator
We had a great time at Children's Hospital on Monday, June 16th. We were
honored to welcome back Officers Angela Rudolph and Wendy Flanagan from
the Detroit Police Department, as well as Carie Deaton. We also were
honored with newcomer Lieutenant Gerod Funderburg from the Detroit Fire
Department at this visit.
Angela, Wendy, Gerod and Carie took care of the crafts with the children
on Monday. Carie and Angela also helped a couple of the girls with
tattoos, makeup, and nail painting. The kids were very outgoing and it
seemed there was plenty of laughter throughout our visit.
We had only 7 children attend our function this week and one room visit.
Though this is a low number for our Children’s Hospital visits, we would
like to think it is because we have many healthy children that simply
were not in the hospital that day. The day started off slow, but before
we knew it, we had a room full of children putting together crafts and
having plenty of fun.
This was a magnificent visit and it appeared that everyone enjoyed
themselves. Thank you to those who helped this week – Angela, Carie,
Gerod and Wendy! Your effort is genuinely appreciated.

Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital- June 2008
Debbie Hormel, Queen For a Day/Heroes
Beaumont Chairperson
Summer arrived in the Garden Room as the
Queen For a Day/Heroes event set-up. We had yummy summer cupcakes to
decorate with marshmallow flower pedals and sprinkles that looked like
sunshine. Our 4 little queens had no problem deciding how to decorate
their "flowers" and even made a few more for their family and
friends. We had 2 precious little ones who couldn't join us, so we
filled goodie bags with toys, books, tiaras, and other treasures that
were delivered to their room.
We were surprised and thrilled to hear
that Maddy, who was a previous Princess was "in house", but were
disappointed that she wasn't able to join us. Just as we were planning
a visit to her room, she was wheeled in. You would have thought that
a rock star had entered the room. She presented us with a lovely thank
you card that she had made for Queen For a Day/Heroes. Jeremy, from
our Heroes program, had sent a package to her with building supplies
and she proudly showed us pictures of the craft she had made! Thanks
Jeremy for sending that kit and the lovely certificate you had made
for her.
A big thanks to Lauren, Diane and Catie
who helped out with the crafts, photos, make-up and visits to the
kids. These wonderful events wouldn't be possible without your
sacrificial giving and love for these little ones!

Tonight's (April 29) Royal Tuck In program
was a huge success. Kim (Detroit Police Officer!), Fay and a new
volunteer Susan (did amazing!!!) joined me at Beaumont where we spent
two hours visiting children in their rooms. We saw around twenty kids
ages 8 mos to 20 yrs old. We tucked each child in with their own cozy
blankets (they were great and I'd love to get my hands on more!!) and
let them pick out a stuffed animal. We then tucked our queen or hero
in for the night and read them an age-appropriate story. In some
cases we spent time talking with the parents who were in desparate
need of adult conversation. In all, everyone did a fantastic job and
Joann, the Child Life Specialist, was really pleased. Starting this
summer, she would like us to come back on a monthly basis.

Fun was to be had by all at the
First Annual Spring Fashion Show held at Gilda’s Club on April 5.
QFAD had 25 amazing volunteers to assist with the event that day. What a
fantastic job everyone did in keeping the event running smoothly and
successfully.
For 24 girls, the day began with
time spent at either Excel Academies of Cosmetology or Gilda’s Club’s
personal salon made possible by Excel as well as Ruth Bellamo. The Excel
students took the time to provide hair, makeup, and nail services to all
of the girls involved ensuring that they would look their absolute best
for the event.
The next step was to the dressing
room where they were able to change into both their casual and formal
outfits provided by Macy’s. Macy’s provided personal shoppers for each
of the girls giving the girls a celebrity shopping experience. Each girl
had two outfits that fit their personality to a tee. There were some
fantastic spring colors….yellow, orange, green, etc.
Onto the photographers next for the
girls. We had five photographers on hand for the event. Cristine’s
Camera, Aly Darin Photography, McConnell Photography, Jody Andrews and
Jenny Elliott were all there documenting the event taking glamour shots
of the girls (which will be provided to each girl free of charge) and
getting an overall aspect of the events that occurred that day.
24 girls made their way down the
runway modeling both their casual and formal attire. They were
absolutely stunning. Each one of these girls looked as if they had been
modeling their entire life! Smiles, tears and cheers filled the room. It
is amazing to look into the audience and see each person sitting there
with a colossal smile on their face. This event was not only for the
girls, but for their friends families as well!
We had an amazing turnout with over
150 people in attendance. A large number of the girls have already been
in contact asking when the next fashion show event will be! They are
looking forward to being a part of our Second Annual Spring Fashion Show
in 2009!

Queen For a Day Helping Other Non-Profits
Debbie Hormel
The Detroit Chapter of Queen For a Day not
only loves to support our little ones, but is totally dedicated to
making sure that we also support our fellow workers in the quest to
make sure every child with cancer is loved. On October 25, the
non-profit organization Camp Mak-a-Dream, held their annual
Cookies-n-Dreams fundraiser at the Somerset Collection Mall. Many
Queen For a Day volunteers showed up to work at the registration area,
the putt-putt golf, to set-up, clean-up and help wherever we were
needed. We all had a wonderful time helping them raise almost
$80,000!
Our chapter has a dedicated group of
volunteers that loves to be together helping the pediatric oncology
community in any way we can! As we work as a team for these children
we've grown closer to each other and really have a great time sharing
in this awesome adventure together. We've gotten to know so many of
our kids in a personal way, as we see them at the hospitals, at our
Michigan camps (where we also volunteer together) and even at events
like this one.

Royal Oak Beaumont Pediatric Oncology
Visit
December 2007
Debbie Hormel
We never know what to expect when actually
walking into the beautiful Garden Room. December's visit was no
exception! We had a little 3 year old princess who was celebrating her
birthday today and informed us that she was fully capable of doing her
own make-up, now that she was 3! Judy Harvey, our favorite baker, came
with her delicious cookies and taught the kids how to decorate them
professionally. Once decorated, most were devoured on the spot by
happy decorators! We had the privilege of having Mayaeni (www.mayaeni.com)
a singer/song writer from New York City come and sing for the kids.
She also brought percussion instruments for everyone to play along
with her---and boy did they ever! Some little ones even got up and
danced. It was amazing to see how her music really touched these
children! Mayaeni also brought along her mother and a friend who is
also in the music business and has now decided to join QFAD as a
volunteer, and presented everyone present with a gift of a CD. Thank
you Mayaeni for volunteering to come and make this visit so special!
Debbie Hormel was joined by QFAD
volunteers Catie Hormel, Jeremy James and Esther Skiba, our area
director.

September 5, 2007
Today I had the honor of visiting with 13 year old
Natalie, in Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. We had been
contacted the week prior by Karen, one of Natalie's former 8th grade
teachers. Kelli and Elizabeth Yager had set up a private home visit
with Natalie for Thursday, September 6 as Natalie was supposed to be
home on the 3rd. On Tuesday evening Karen called and told us that
Natalie had not come home and had in fact gotten a lung infection and
was in the Intensive Care Unit. The doctors were not giving her much
time, and Karen asked if we could come as soon as possible. My
schedule was open so it was decided that the visit would be the next
day At noon. Karen met me in the lobby of the hospital with a hug and
a thank you for being there. She told me Natalie was not doing well.
We went to Natalie's room where we saw a tiny young girl, struggling
for breath even though she was hooked up to oxygen. Her parents were
there as were some of the hospital staff. The nurses had decorated the
room with a beautiful canopy of netting over the bed, balloons were
tied to each corner of the bed. An exquisite pink prom dress hung up
in the room. Natalie had asked that it be brought up to the hospital
so she could put it on for the visit, unfortunately she was not up to
putting it on. Her parents, both their had also, on her instructions
brought a photo album for me to see. It included pictures of the prom
held in Natalie's honor after 8th grade graduation, because her
friends knew it would be the only prom Natalie would ever attend.
There were also pictures of Natalie ice skating, she was training to
be an Olympic skater.
The nurses made Natalie as comfortable as they could
and the Queen for a Day PARTY started.
The hospital social worker brought in 4 friends from
school and Natalie's skating coach and a group of other doctors and
nurses that had been caring for Natalie. Each of the ladies were given
bright pink boas and the boys from school humored us and put on pirate
hats. What was at first a very solemn room was becoming quite
joyous.We were indeed celebrating Natalie!
Because of Natalie's frail condition we tried to keep
her quiet and we did not do the usual make-up, nail polish, or crafts.
She was given 6 or 7 tiaras to choose from and after a
few minutes she whispered that she couldn't decide which she wanted as
she loved them all. I told her to keep them all because a Queen should
have one for each day of the week. I wish you could have all witnessed
the smile on her face. We took lots of pictures as everyone in the
room wanted their picture with Natalie. A special friends picture was
taken of the 5 school friends and each of them were given a copy and
special frame to put it in.Natalie was given several gifts from QFAD
including a beautiful blanket hand made by Rose Champion who sends
them for our kids all the way from Florida. Her friends brought her a
banner that had messages from Natalie's friends at school along with a
bouquet of roses and a bouquet of sunflowers. The nurses had a special
cake made for the party and had brought in a pizza lunch.A young
resident doctor presented her with a quilt that she had transferred
photos of Natalie doing the things she enjoyed, all of us at the party
were asked to sign it as well. It was very obvious that Natalie had
found her way into many peoples hearts, including mine.
The next day an email arrived from Karen, who had
stayed at the hospital into the evening with Natalie and her parents,
she told me that Natalie had worn a tiara the entire time and clutched
the scepter, which I also gave her to keep. Her mom wanted to put them
away for the night but Natalie refused to let her. Natalie's father
had gone home to get fresh clothes and when he returned to the
hospital he had a HUGE bouquet of 3 dozen roses that had been
delivered to Natalie from a Queen for a Day family. Natalie told him
that"this day just keeps getting better".
On Thursday, the family was told Natalie had only 24
hours to live, and family started to arrive from Argentina and Peru,
where the family is from. Well, Natalie had other plans. By Saturday
she was using only oxygen in her nose and was drinking lots of fluids.
She told the nurses she wanted to go outside, so they took bed and
all!, She then wanted to go to the beach, so she was taken to the
therapy room were she got into a bathing suit and sat into a whirlpool
tub. The nurses gave her and her cousins that had arrived from out of
town squirt guns and they had a squirt gun fight. What amazing staff.
I hope, with all my heart that one day our program will
not be needed because cancer will no longer be an issue, until then I
am honored to be a part of the journey of these brave children and
their families.

Camp QualityOn August 17, 2007
a group of 17 volunteers form the Detroit chapter of Queen/Heroes for
a Day made the 4 hour drive to Camp Quality in Petoskey, MI. We had
such a great day! This year we included the boys in our activities
that were all in keeping with the theme of "Camp Quality is a
treasure". We had 19 boys and I think their favorite thing was the air
brush tattoos and the face painting. Although we did have a number of
them get their nails painted and had colored gels put in thier hair to
make it red or blue and stand it up. Adding them to our program was
great and I look forward to having them with us from now on.
The girls, as always, love to get their hair, make-up
and nails done. We saw 26 girls this year and had a lot of fun with
them.
One of the best things this year was the addition of 3
male volunteers, Sergeant Jeremy (JJ) James of the Detroit Police
Dept., Patrick his cousin, and Noah Raminick. The kids really enjoyed
having them at the event. JJ played pin the eye patch on the pirate,
Patrick did the face painting with a never ending line and Noah helped
with a pirate word search game.
We had so much going on I just wish we had the whole
day to spend with the kids, it goes by so fast.
All the volunteers can't wait for our return trip next
year.

Utica/Shelby Kiwanis
Presentation
Debbie and Catie Hormel had the honor and
privilege of presenting and explaining about the Queen For a Day program
to the Utica/Shelby Kiwanis group at their weekly lunch meeting on June
7. We brought with us a typical “goody bag” for a Queen and a Hero, our
crowns, boas, firefighter hats, badges, crafts, and Polaroid camera. An
explanation of our program and details of a typical hospital party were
presented. Afterwards, we made time for specific questions from the
group about our all-volunteer program. Overall, it was a wonderful time
of sharing and learning.
If you have a group or club that would like
to have Queen For a Day representative come and speak, please contact

Debbie Hormel, Chairperson, Royal Oak
Beaumont Pediatric Oncology
What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon:
being with old friends, enjoying some fun, laughter, and making new
friends! Well that is exactly what Queen For a Day volunteers
experience at our Garden Parties at Royal Oak’s Pediatric Oncology
unit. On June 5th, we spent time with our good friend Mr.
Magic, Angelo Briggs, as he made us laugh with his silly lunch bag… that
his mom forgot to pack and we needed to find….magically. And who would
be the best person to help us find his missing lunch? Well Dora the
Explorer (Derek Camponi) of
course!
Debbie Hormel was joined by Patricia Cody,
Barb Dauphinee and two new friends to the QFAD volunteer group, Karen
Blazyk and Carol Merrit. Thanks girls for helping to make this a
memorable time for everyone!
Our time in the Garden Room was full of
activities before the magic show. We did tattoos, manicures, played
games, decorated picture frames, and of course, had our Queen and Heroes
portraits taken complete with crowns, firefighter hats and accessories.
With 7 queens being crowned, and 4 Heroes being honored, the time passed
quickly.
We are looking forward to our Christmas in
July Party when, who knows, the Grinch might come visit us! If you would
like to join this amazing group of volunteers who are paid with smiles,
hugs, and incredible friends, please contact Queen For a Day at
www.detroitqfad.com or Debbie
Hormel at

Queen for a Day was contacted
regarding a young woman named Rosanna Rubago. Rosanna is a senior in
high school and was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She was
scheduled for surgery to remove the ovary and possibly a kidney on May
21, 10 days before her senior prom. Rosanna was very determined to make
it to her prom, QFAD was asked to help, if in fact she was able to
attend. On the day of the surgery a 12 lb. cancerous tumor was removed,
when the tumor was removed the kidney immediately turned pink and began
to function again. The tumor had been lying on the kidney.
The day before prom her doctor gave
the Ok for her to attend prom.
Since none of the volunteer from
QFAD is professionals at nails and hair styling, we called Ruth
Williams, volunteer and director of Excel Academies of Cosmetology and
asked if there would be someone able to help. Student Sarah Heddleston
along with teacher Lisa Hall, made the 45-minute trip to Rosanna’s home
and treated her to an afternoon of pampering.
I received an email the day after
prom telling me how glamorous Rosanna was and that she received a lot of
special attention at prom.
A great big thank you to Ruth for
always being there to lend a hand, and to Sarah and Lisa for helping
make Rosanna’s prom something to remember.

Morgan, Josie Byrd and myself, Jennifer Groomes. We had 4 patients in
the Children's Garden-2 young ladies and 2 Heroes. I did one personal
room visit and we had 2 other room visits that were not up for company,
but happily accepted a gift bag. So, 7 in total. The ward was actually
full, but most of the children were vey little or to sick for company or
to leave their room.
We did photo frame, door hangers and some nice sports related crafts for
the boys. (In march we will be decorating cookies and shamrocks!). The
ladies looked lovely with their freshly painted nails and pretty

We had a great visit today. Josie and I were joined by two new
volunteers, Rhonda and her 13 year old daughter Ricki. Rachel's
mother kept our visit a surprise and surprised she was! She had
thought that her entire family coming today to welcome her home from
the hospital was the surprise and then we showed up:) The house was
filled with Rachel's family including grandparents, aunts, and
uncles. It was a bit awkward at first for Rachel since everyone had
their cameras and video cameras out to capture the excitement but with
the help of her sisters and her cousins she quickly went to work on
door hangers and having a manicure. Rachel and her younger sisters
were treated to tiaras, pink feather boas and goody bags
with Polly Pocket toys and other age appropriate gifts. A special ice
cream treat was brought for Rachel by Rhonda and her daughter Ricki
including some moose tracks ice cream and Mint Chocolate chip (
which Rachel told me is one of her favs) We even had a gift bag for
her brother complete with a CD of his favorite band and some pocket
size football games and toys. We presented Rachel with goodies to help
her fill her scrapbook including cheerleading stickers, scrapbook
pages in her cheer squad colors, and cheerleader cut outs to decorate
her pages.
Before we left Rachel's mom gave us all support bracelets for her with
her care pages address on it so that we could keep in touch. Ricki and
Rachel exchanged email addresses and will hopefully be the first pen
pals for Dena's program. Her mom said it would be ok to give out her
address or people can go to her care page at Motts rachelcollett11.

We had the pleasure of providing the Royal treatment to 10 young ladies
and providing gift bags to another 10 who were to ill to join us in the
activity room. Hot pink feather boas were given to each queen with the
option of wearing it or having it draped around their IV poles, which
was a popular request. Two brand new volunteers joined Maureen Huebel
and Beth Sills for a fun afternoon of crafts, manicures, and makeovers.
Brooke Allen-Burnstien, Mrs. Central Michigan Galaxy joined us and drove
all the way from Saginaw to help out with the visit. Our other new
volunteer is Lauren Demember of Plymouth, MI who is a nursing student at
Madonna College. Each queen was given a gift bag upon their departure,
containing a princess sticker or activity book (depending on their age),
a full size lip gloss and depending on their age either a piece of
sparkly jewelry, Barbie doll, or cute furry hand puppet. The afternoons
event was a success thanks to all the volunteers and especially the
Child Life staff who stepped in with their camera when we had a camera
emergency.
As always the staff at Detroit Children's Hospital invited us back in
the future and commented that our organization is very well appreciated
by the staff and patients and they believe that we are one of the most
organized volunteer groups that they work with.

Sunday morning October 8,
with sun shining and the fall leaves majestically gleaming in bright
shades of orange and yellows, the volunteers of QFAD Metro-Detroit set
out to brighten the day of 4 year old Lyndee Macek.
2 volunteers, Angie Sanchez & Esther
Skiba, headed north for the hour drive and 1,
Lieutenant Donielle Bannon, Ms.
Michigan Galaxy, headed south on a 3 hour drive, to meet at the home of
volunteer Britt Harrison, State Director of the Michigan Galaxy
Pageants, who lives just a few short miles from our Queen to Be.
We arrived at Lyndee’s home around
noon, where Lyndee and her mom Nichole greeted us. Shy at first, Lyndee
quickly warmed up to us as we brought out the craft projects. Lyndee put
us all to work peeling the backing off of foamy shapes that she was
sticking to her photo picture frame that would hold her coronation
photo. Stickers were applied to the front as well as the back, leaving
only a space for her precious face to shine through.
We then moved on to decorating a
paper doll Queen cut out. Lyndee chose the perfect accessory stickers to
complete the dolls outfit.
Donielle took over the duties of
nail polish application followed with makeup done by Britt. By this time
Lyndee was more then happy to say CHEESE for all the cameras.
Next came gifts, where Lyndee was
given princess themed items including pj’s, sticker book, rubber ducky,
hat and her very own Lyndee doll that was created by doll artist Barbara
Grossman. The doll was made to look just like Lyndee and was dressed in
a fancy dress complete with tiara and scepter.
It was then time for the coronation
of our special guest, with a pink feather boa around her neck and
wearing a QFAD sash, Donielle had the honor of placing the crown on her
perfect little head and declaring her Queen for a Day. We also treated
Lyndee’s 1-year-old sister to a sparkly tiara.
While we were visiting Nichole told
us that Monday October 9 Lyndee would be going in for 5 days of
inpatient chemotherapy.
Upon getting permission from
Lyndee’s mom, Lyndee’s address was sent out to all the volunteers at
QFAD, Metro-Detroit asking for cards and letters to be sent to this
brave little girl.
Within hours replies were sent
saying that cards and gifts were in the mail to brighten her day,
including pictures from a teachers 1st grade students.
We look forward to updates from
Nichole on Lyndee’s fight and will hold her close to our hearts.

On Saturday, October 7, QFAD
Metro-Detroit, had the opportunity to have their volunteers pass out
information on our program at the 2006, Michigan Association of
Recreational vehicles & campgrounds, (MARVAC) held at the Rock Financial
Showplace in Novi.
Our volunteers also collected
donations and answered questions for people that were interested not
only in our services, but also for those interested in volunteering and
passed out prismatic crowns to the children that stopped by our table.
Volunteers that day were, Ruth
Williams, Maureen Huebel, Barb Johnson, Angie Sanchez, Beth Monicatti-Blank,
and Esther Skiba.
Queen for a Day thanks Mr. William
Sheffer, Marvac Director and show manager for donating the table space
for us to use, and Beth Monicatti-Blank from All Season’s Communications
for arranging for the donated space.
The support of the business
community for the QFAD program is greatly appreciated. With the support
of both these groups we were able to raise several hundred dollars and
make the community aware of the service we can provide to children with
cancer.
Before leaving the show on Saturday
I was informed by Beth that she had arranged with Mr. Sheffer, for
donated space at the next MARVAC show on February 17, 2007.
We are looking forward to our return
visit.

painted, toes too! Near the end of the visit, there were a lot of kids
who could not come to us, so we made a craft for the rest of the kids,
about 11 or 12 all together. Lori and one of the student aids delivered
them to the rooms.
The
activities director, Sandy Dimaso was so grateful for our visit, she has
invited us back in September and would like for us to make St. John’s a
regular visit every other month or so. She said near the holidays there
is a lot going on, but just before and just after the holiday the kids
need the outside stimulation. She liked that our group is not aggressive
in making the kids participate, we made them feel welcome regardless of
how much or little they could do. We caught the attention of some of the
other staff and the parents, who thought we were very cool and loved the
interaction with the kids.

face light up when I came into her room wearing the funny animal glasses
that I had brought for the kids. She was on a ventilator and unable to
speak but the smile told her feelings.
Each girl at the event got a goodie bag with makeup case, a full size
lib gloss or lib balm, a princess coloring book, a pair of funny animal
glasses and a new cuddly friend, along with their tiaras and a bright
pink feather boa.
One of the parents came over and thanked me and fellow princesses, (AKA
Volunteers) Beth, Marlene, and Sue, after her daughter had gone back to
her room and said it was the highlight of her daughters day!
A nurse told us that the staff and hospital volunteers look forward to
our visits.

This was our first opportunity to be in
the activity center there in quit some time! We had 3 crafts, lots of
glitter and makeup, nails, lots of laughter, conversation and the
opportunity to meet some amazing kids (and staff!) We saw 6 queens and
1 energetic happy Hero! That fireman's hat was made for him! We also
did 4 room visits all to teens that were not able to get out of bed! I
was quite touched by an 18 year old girl who was having a really tough
day. I brought in a few crafts, magazine, full make-up, nail polish,
hip hair bands, boa and tiara. She just beamed! Suddenly she sparkled
and was full of conversation....I just reminded her that she is a Queen
and should feel as much !!!!
The child life specialist LOVED the event and can't wait to set up more!
What a great day! |

We got to meet 7 beautiful Queens between
the ages of 5 to 17 that enjoyed make-up applications, manicures and a
variety of tatoos! The girls all enjoyed making door hangers and
decorating frames. They all had beautiful pictures done in boas, crowns
and a sash! These special ladies loved putting these pictures in the
frames they made! We also had some sweet snacks while they chose hats
donated and each girl was thrilled to go home with a gift for their
age! There were a lot of siles, even the Docs came in and chatted with
us! The nurses were thrilled with the event and would like to have us
back this summer again! We had 5 new volunteers help, they all were
pros! The highlight had to be when all the girls were working on the
projects chatting and were excited to find out how much many had in
common(music, school,sports, annoying siblings,taste in jewelry...) and
really enjoyed getting to know each other!

Last night two of us
volunteers from Queen for a Day were able to be a part of a school
Activity, which was very cool. A freshman, Danielle Drake's counselor
has been in touch with QFAD for about a month trying to get something
together. Danielle has stage 4 Hodgkins Disease, she had to leave
school last year about 6 weeks before the end of the year- 8th grade.
Danielle had been receiving all A's & B's in school and since she began
middle school she had been on the honor roll. Due to her exemplary
status the school district decided to pass Danielle with out finishing
the 8th grade to go to high school. Per Danielle's counselor at
Crestwood H.S. in Dearborn Heights, MI, she was very ill at the
beginning of the school year. Danielle had to miss many days to attend
chemo and due to sickness from the treatment she missed even more
school.
Janet Repitor and Lori Faitel from Metro Detroit QFAD had the privilege
of attending Crestwood H.S. "Mr. Crestwood show" last night. This show
was incredible and very fun. 3 or 4 boys from each high school grade
were chosen by vote to represent their classes. For each grade and a
few combined acts, the boys danced and did various acts. Something like
a Miss America pageant. Just before the intermission, QFAD was asked to
take the stage and present Danielle with a tiara, boa and sash. We also
gave her several gifts donated from caring people throughout Metro
Detroit, including a gift certificate to a salon in lieu of queen
treatment usually provided due to the school pageant situation. Danielle
was thin, and had a very nice wig on. She accepted all of these things
with tears running down her face while classmates in the audience yelled
"Go Danielle!" After the presentation and during the intermission,
Janet and I, Lori, were packing up in the hall and Danielle's counselor
came to tell us how wonderful this organization is and that if we looked
around the halls at this time there were many boys and girls shedding
tears of happiness for Danielle. At the end of the presentation
Danielle's mother took the microphone and told the audience that as of
this week Danielle's doctors have deemed her free of cancer cells!
Thank you QFAD for letting me be a part of this.

We had three volunteers, Tanya Cohen, Beth Sills
and myself. 19 young ladies descended on the activity center yesterday
afternoon at Detroit Children's hospital to get together to complete
several crafts including decorating door hangers for their rooms and
picture frames which would hold their crowning photo. Hot pink feather
boas were distributed to each girl, some chose to wear them around
their necks while others used them to decorate their IV
poles. Makeovers were also done on the girls who wished to receive
them and manicures complete with silver stick on stars were done.
Each girl was crowned Queen for a Day with her own
shiny gold or silver tiara which she got to keep. The little girls
were also thrilled to receive their own light up septer and necklace
sets.

On October 20, 2005 Detroit's Queen for a Day Chapter transformed the
juvenile patients of Beaumont Hospital into Queens and Heroes for the
day complete with sparkling tiaras and bright red firefighter hats. 7
Queen queen for a day members ( four of them were brand new and this
was their first of hopefully many events!) including one gentleman and
one pageant titleholder, Mrs. Michigan American Renaissance 2006. The
volunteers included Tonya and Murray Cohen, Jennifer and Esther Skiba,
who is the new director of The Detroit Chapter, Elaine Logan, Roz
Fantich, and Maureen Huebel (AKA Mrs. Michigan). The volunteers
polished nails, applied make up and tatoos, assisted the children with
crafts, and one volunteer even made room visits to visit with one
young lady who was too ill to come to the event and two teens who
preferred to stay in their rooms. The Detroit Chapter saw a total of
nine children and teens that day including a little boy and teen boy.
The event was a success and the Recreational Therapy department was
appreciative of the visit and requested the group return again in the
future.

The Detroit Chapter of Queen for a Day provided makeovers for 30 girls
and gave out 32 gift bags filled with jewelry, arts and crafts, make up
samples, etc at Camp Quality in Petoskey. The instructors and students
from Excell Beauty School did up-dos and fancy hairstyles to make the
girls into queens for their big dance that night while the rest of the
volunteers polished fingernails, did the girls' make up, and spent time
getting to know the girls. The girls enjoyed themselves very much and
the activity director has requested we come again next year. The
volunteers for the event were Lori Faitel, Ruth Williams,
owner/instructor Excell Beauty School and two of her students plus
another instructor, Cari Barber who is a local Miss America titleholder,
a lady named Lois who is a friend of a Detroit QFAD chapter member, and
Mrs. Michigan, Maureen Huebel.

Gilda's Club |
On April 15th QFAD welcomed 25 teens (ages 14 - 18) at Gilda's Club
for an old-fashioned "Pajama Party"....while the girls didn't bring
their PJs, they did bring positive attitudes and a willingness to
try something new.
We started by asking them to pair up with someone they had never
met. We then passed around a packet of Teen Magazine Quizzes on
fashion, personality, boys, etc. It proved to be an excellent
ice-breaker and everyone made new friends.
After a pizza dinner provided by Gilda's Club, the girls gathered
around for a psychic experience. Trisha, a local psychic, gave each
girl an insight into the mystic world and then gave them each a 3-5
minute reading. The girls were on the edge of their seats in
amazement. During the readings, we pulled girls out three at a time
for manicures.
We noticed many new faces at this event, which was nice to see.
They loved being pampered and were in awe of the gorgeous tiaras.
An ice-cream sundae bar opened after the psychic finished and
everyone left with full stomachs and full hearts.

The event was unique, as we hosted both boys and girls. Volunteers that
attended the event included: Susan Kaplan, Beth Sills, Maureen Huebel
(AKA, Mrs. Michigan) and Eric Conrad.
Children arrived shortly after set up and we had coloring crowns, photo
frames and foam door hangers to entertain. The foam door hangers were a
huge hit and some of the children had fun including their names and
messages. All the young ladies enjoyed manicures, and tattoos. One of
our volunteers made bracelets with beads spelling out the young ladies
name or nickname. A young boy sat quietly decorating a door hanger and
I asked him if he too might like a bracelet, a little apprehensive as to
whether a boy would consider a piece of jewelry and to my surprise his
face lit up. He was soon furnished with his bracelet, and then his
personality started to shine. He wanted to be dressed in the Royal
Kings Gown and Beamed for his picture.
We dressed and crowned many children, but our volunteers didn't stop
there! After all that could visit us had left the activity room we made
bedside visits. Our volunteers made little bags of the arts and crafts,
make-up and nail polish and went mobile. In total we met with seventeen
delightful Queens and Kings and had a wonderful day. |

At the event we hosted both boys and girls of all ages. Volunteers that
attended the event included: Michelle Manix, Tori Manix, Tina Gallardo,
Kim Pocock, and Maureen Huebel, (AKA, Mrs. Michigan).
I couldn't believe how excited the staff was to see us! We arrived to
find decorations of boas' beads and tons of tulle. There was even a
special chair decorated as "the crown."
We set up in two rooms, the crafts room and the makeover room. Michelle
and Tori got to work giving manicures, tattoos and applying make-up
while Tina, Kim, Maureen and I got started on the crafts. At this event
we brought the foam door hangers, the coloring crowns, greeting card
supplies and the bracelet kit. The children had already arrived and we
got to "work" right away
In total we met with around a dozen delightful Queens and Kings and had
a wonderful day. |

Five Fabulous Queens, Tina Gallardo, Maureen Huebel (AKA Mrs. Michigan),
Lori Faitel, Janet Cummings and Miriam Rhein, took on the challenging
endeavor of making-over almost 40 potential beauty queens.
We arrived bright and early at Camp Quality feeling a little
apprehensive and excited. Although we were early enough to set up prior
to the start of the event, young ladies started to congregate at the
door giggling with excitement. We set up our wares; a nail polish,
tattoos, make-up, hair, gift and crowning station and got to work
immediately.
For the complete three hours, Tina, Maureen, Lori, Janet and I worked
constantly on nails, faces and the crowning finale. Some queens had
attended the event last year, but most ladies were experiencing “The
Royal Treatment” for the first time. The young ladies were telling us
about their dresses for the dance so we could color coordinate them with
their nails and make-up. This year we had tiaras that were a simple
wire with some diamante on the front which were very popular with the
ladies that could not wear the comb variety due to their illness.
We gave out the gifts, which were all make-up bags that included full
size lipstick, make-up samples and all had a full size blush or eye
shadow. Also a piece of jewelry was wrapped up in tissue paper with a
“You are someone special” sticker. The young ladies loved the jewelry.
A few ladies opened their bags prior to leaving and I overheard them
saying they would wear them tonight. At 12 noon when the room began to
clear we all looked at each other in amazement, we had accomplished our
task and were exhausted! I can’t wait for next year.

We accomplished another successful teen event at the Gilda’s Club thanks
to our wonderful volunteers who arrived to cater to 30 girls and boys.
Our activities for the ladies included make-up application and
hairstyles thanks to Ruth Williams and the students of Excel. Our Queen
volunteers applied manicures and body tattoos. Lois Pershin, Beth
Monicatti-Blank, Maureen Huebel, (AKA, Mrs. Michigan), Angie Sanchez,
Lolita McGlory, both her daughters and Miriam Rhein were able to
volunteer for this event. We had so many teens that had never attended
a QFAD event, so we had many candidates that experience the final
crowning treatment.
For the boys Eric Stokes, a prior Detroit Lions player arrived to sign
autographs and talk to the children about his career. Eric was a big
hit with the boys, girls and adults and spent lots of time with the
children.
Also to cater to the boys, Robert Rhein organized and oversaw a video
game competition. It was a very popular event and young ladies signed
up too. There were three groups of four players and the winner of each
group went on to the finals. The winner of the finals won a video
game for their achievement.
We left with the teenagers pampered and pretty to enjoy an evening of
singing and dancing.

Five Wonderful Queens, Tina Gallardo, Beth Sills, Lisa Latessa, Janet
Cummings and Lois Pershin gathered our supplies and headed out to the
Detroit Children’s Hospital of Michigan. I was so sad that I could not
attend due to the flu, but Tina was the gem we all know and love and
volunteered to jump in and take care of everything. I am so
appreciative of her generous nature and was so grateful for everything
she brings to QFAD.
The event was planned between 1pm and 3pm and as always the young ladies
were eager for our event to begin. We set up our wares; a nail polish,
tattoos, make-up, crafts, gift and crowning station and got to work
immediately. Twenty young ladies visited with us.
Our crafts included a Halloween theme. At a local Michael’s craft store
I found glow in the dark Halloween decorations, and scary foam shapes
such as spiders, spider webs and tombstones. There were fun candy corn
shapes too, so the young ladies had the opportunity to use them to
decorate the acrylic photograph frames and the foam door hangers. 3D
glitter art has always been a hit and we had every color imaginable
thanks to a donation from our Beauty Queen, Maureen Huebel.
