Queen for a Day Event at Children’s
Hospital of Denver - June 24th
Tracie and I held our second QFAD
event at the new Children’s Hospital of Denver on June 24th.
It was the best turn-out ever with approximately 75-100 children in
attendance. We feel one of the reasons for this great success was that
we placed volunteers at the front and Outpatient entrances wearing a boa
and tiara and directing the patients and their families to our location
in the lobby.
The activities were dressing-up
little girls and applying their make-up and nail polish, a safety wheel
for the children to spin which quizzed them about fire safety, touring
the fire-truck parked outside, and decorating fun-foam tiaras, princess
hats and visors.
Our heroes were the S. Metro
Firefighters. The have attended almost all of our events and have been
a wonderful addition to our program. In fact, they told us that they
are really only involved with one other charity. What an honor that we
are one of the two that they have chosen to represent. Our beauty
queens were Ms. United Nations Vanessa Anderson, and Miss Teen Colorado,
Taylor Smith. Both thoroughly enjoyed participating in QFAD.
For the first time I went with the
firefighters and a beauty queen to go up on the medical floors and visit
the children. We gave each of the children Care Bears to snuggle and to
help them in their treatments and recovery from their illness. The
children and their families got a delight out of their special visitors
and the Care Bear gift from Queen/Hero for a Day.

Our party was held on January 11th at the new Children's Hospital of
Denver. There were 8 volunteers(Lynn and Kydal Corolus, Tacie Tate,
Lisa Newman, Robbie Demos, Claudia Heslin, Mike West, and Kimberly)
and 4 firefighters who brought a safety game and the fire truck for
the kids and their families to explore. Miss Teen Colorado, Kimberly
was also in attendance.
There were approximately 63 girls and 52 boys who either came to
visit us, or were visited by Miss Teen Colorado and the firefighters
on the patient floors.
We had a craft of Fun-Foam crowns and caps for the children to
decorate. The firefighters brought a giant wheel for the kids to
spin, and answer a question about safety. The little girls were made
up with make-up, crowns and boas. The boys wore fire hats and
received a hero toy.
Queen for a Day was at Children's Hospital for 4 hours visiting with
the children. The next event will include the Outpatient Clinic as
well for patients who come in for treatment, but are well enough to go
home and be with their families.

Traice tate, co-director with me
for the Denver Chapter, held our first party last week at the
Children's Hospital of Denver. Our volunteers were Kathy Grimes,
Mark from Costco, Lynn Carolus and her daughter Kendal, Tracie's
daughter Tara, and her friend Taylor, and a few hospital helpers.
We had several activity
stations set up, with make-up, treats, hero things (including three
firefighters who parked their firetruck outside for the children and
their families to tour) and a craft. The craft was a big hit. The
children made picture frames from empty CD cases, in which they put
their polaroid pictures. Then they decorated the outside of the cases
with Fun Foam stickers.
Tracie and I felt great about
how our first party turned out. We had such a warm response from the
many people and businesses that made donations, to the people at the
hospital, and especially the patients and their families. The entire
experience was more rewarding than any of us could have imagined. We
truly look forward to many more events, and wonderful experiences with
Queen for a Day!
